Obama: Democrats Will Cave

Just like I've been saying, the Democrats are going to be the ones to blink in this face to face showdown with President Bush over the Iraq war and funding it.

Senator Barack Obama (D-Illinois) says that if the President vetoes the war funding bill, then Congress will sent him a bill without a withdrawal timeline because "nobody wants to play chicken with the troops."

Obama reiterated his message that people need to put pressure on Congress and the President to change course in Iraq

"If the president vetoes this, the American people have to continue to put pressure on their representatives so that at some point we may be able to get a veto-proof majority for moving this war in a different direction,"

And elect him president I gather.

The thing is, if the Democrats cave, then that's it for two years. They won't be able to get a veto-proof majority until at least 2009, when Bush won't be president anymore. At the point, a Democrat may be president and the veto-proof majority is moot, but then again, with Hillary Clinton the best the Democrats have to offer, they may need the veto-proof majority against President Giuliani.

This is not to say Obama will not vote to override the veto or to cut all funding, just that he is certain it won't be overridden nor will funding be cut. The truth is, the Democratic majority is not big enough to stop the President in his tracks. Like I said, once he has the war power, you can't really take it away without a Congressional supermajority.

And quite frankly, I'm not a fan of the supermajority, Democratic or Republican.
